Chapter Thirty-Five

Cassie had some vague thought that she was in a car as she felt the vibration of a vehicle. The sound of an engine hummed, and her nostrils could smell a familiar scent of a new car’s upholstery. I must be hallucinating, she thought.

No, she thought to herself, it really sounds like a car with that steady hum of a large engine. It felt like an SUV as it bumped and something in the road went under the tires.

She tried to open her eyes but she couldn’t, and she tried again. As the effort exhausted her, she gave up. God, she was tired. It felt like she hadn’t slept for days. Her body ached all over, especially her head. She tried to remember what happened, how she had been kidnapped by some strange man with long black hair, and she definitely remembered his eyes. His eyes were the color of burned amber, and his stare still brought chills up her spine. The rest of her memories were foggy.

Reaching her hand out, she found something covering her shoulders as it pulled closer. She took a deep breath through her nose and smelled something unfamiliar but wonderful. She took more breaths in, and there was something else. She could smell a seductive, dark musk with a minty spice.

Cassie’s body began to feel cold and she shivered until her teeth chattered. Suddenly, she felt a large warm hand touch her face and heard a deep soothing voice. “Shhh . . . it’s going to be OK, Cassie.”

Her heart pounded as she struggled to open her eyes, but her lids refused to obey. As the unfamiliar hand caressed her cheek, she instantly stopped shivering when her body was consumed with the feeling of euphoria. A warm electrical current soothed in her mind and moved down her arms to her fingertips . . . and down her legs to her toes.

Am I rescued? she thought. Who’s sitting beside me?

Except no sound came out of her mouth, though she moved her lips. She formed the words again, forcing air through her voice box, but only a hoarse groan released and nothing more.

Why aren’t my eyes working? she thought as she began to panic. She started to thrash around and then heard the sweetest sound that had ever reached her ears. “I’ve got you, Cassie.” Drakon’s voice was low, full of strength and power. “You’re safe with me. I’ll protect you.”

She started to sob as she felt his hand wipe away her tears, and her relief was so great, she slid into blackness.

The car began to slow as they eased the Hummer into the gated Covenant and parked in the garage. Drakon gathered Cassie in his arms, pulled her close to his chest, and carefully stepped out as Jace held the door open.

“Dr. Carrington is already here waiting downstairs in the exam room,” Tim confirmed. “Drakon, I’ll let you take her there. Jace . . . I need you in the study . . . We need to talk.
